Anyone remember reading this required short story in school?? I heard someone mention the title yesterday and can't seem to remember who the author was, or what exactly the storyline was about... all I remember is how is disturbed me...

I don't remember the author, but the short story is about some farming town that holds a "lottery" each year. The winner of the lottery is stoned to death as a sacrifice in order to have a successful harvest year. It's a disturbing little story illustrating the tyranny of mob rule and blindly following rules of society simply because that is how things have always been.

the three most powerful men who control the town, economically as well as politically, also happen to administer the lottery. wink.gif

Aha, how surprising... and if there was a sarcastic face... I'd be using it right about now.
